I have an Asus maximus impact iv (z87 board).

I have tried to boot it but when i do it gives me the q-code A2 Which means "IDE DETECT" and doesnt boot or go to bios.

I have windows 8.1 on an SSD from my old system, and im trying to put it into my new build but the "boot device LED goes off). Also when i boot it without the SSD it still wont go to bios.

What shall i do?

Sorry if this wasnt very well explained

Thanks for any help. I'm very stuck

You cant use a windows that was on an old pc on your new one.

You have to wipe the SSD and reinstall windows.

Uhm.... wat?

No. You can use your old ssd/hdd with windows on, you just have to re-activate windows if you get a new motherboard.

You cant just take windows from computer A and put it on computer B and windows be okay with all of the hardware change.

Registry files wont match up.

Registry settings wont match up.

It takes 20 min to re-install windows its a simple fix.

m8... you're wrong. I did it, my friend did it. Does this show that it cant be done? -.-

It can be done, but it's far easier to format.

Uninstalling drivers, installing new ones, trouble shooting, reactivating, take quite a while if done correctly.

Formatting with a USB takes 10 minutes, 10 more minutes to install drivers (if you have them all ready) then 20-30 minutes for updates to install and you're done.

It's not a race to the bottom.

But if you want to keep all your stuff?

But if you want to keep all your stuff?

You have all your directory's on another drive. Like My documents, Downloads, My pictures and so on will be on my R:\ drive. Games, rendered videos, recordings and so on G:\.

After your format all you need to do is point Windows to their locations. It's a 5 minute job tops. The C:\ drive should only have barebone Windows with select programs.

If you want to keep your back grounds and the majority of your windows feel, like custom cursors (that came with Windows), colour themes, icons on the desktop, passwords then you can easily transfer it using "Windows Easy Transfer". Takes 30 minutes to create the back up and another 30 minutes to restore on your new format and it comes with Windows.

If you need reg files then that can easily be obtained as well for lets say Microsoft Office products. Save the reg keys from Regedit.exe save it to your D:\ drive (R:\ for me) and replace the reg after format.

Reg keys are harder to find and to be honest requires more work then needed. Some programs come with a repair feature that will replace it for you. Games on Steam don't require much. A simple copy and paste will do.

It's not a race to the bottom.
