Hi

I am looking to build up a good video editing machine that will provide a few good years of service with the ability to upgrade in the future. I have pulled together the following spec and am now trying to finalise the build and get going.

Essentially I use Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator with Premiere Pro my main focus. I want the PC to also have plenty of storage to host video and photo file and provide quick access to a library of content via Adobe Bridge.

1. How should I configure the storage? currently I am thinking...SSD 256 for operating system, SSD 512 for projects I am working on and the 2TB WDs in a RAID 1 configuration for archived content?

2. Do I need a RAID Card?

3. How many Harddrives / SSDs can i fit into this case and is there and ideal configuration for editing - Ive read that three disks is good 1. operation/program file 2. Cache 3. Media

System Spec

Intel Canoe i7 5820k (3.3GHz / 15MB)

MSI X99A SLI PLUS S2011-3 X99 ATX

Coller master Fan hyper 212 Evo

Kingston HyperX Fury Black Ed. - 16GB (2x8GB)

Asus GeForce GTX 960 2GB

Corsair PSU CX750M

Samsung SSD 850 Evo Basic 250GB (Operating System)

Samsung SSD 850 Evo Basic 512GB (Project Files)

2x Western Digital Red 2TB  (????)

ASUS DRW-24F1ST

Icy Box IB-865 3.5 inch Multicard Reader with USB 3.0 Hub

Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64 Bit

Fractal Design Define R5 White Computer Case

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Richard

If you are not installing a ton of HDD/SSD inside your case, you normally would not need a RAID card if your logic board has enough SATA ports for the number of drives you want.  Configure the RAID 1 in Windows disk management.

I would recommend getting like a 3TB or 4TB WD drives, meaning higher capacity, for RAID 1 setup.  But do not use internal drives for long term storage, archival and backup of your source files.  Archive and backup your original files to external storage.

Your case has 2x 5.25 bays and 8 internal 3.5 bays.  Now if you use something like an Icy Dock Tough Armor multi-bay case that would go into a 5.25 bay you can increase the amount of 2.5 drives that can fit in your case.  Your case also seems to have 2x SSD mounts behind the logic board panel.

However your logic board seems to have 10x SATA ports onboard, so this is what will limit the number of drives you can connect without getting a PCI express expansion card if any exists.

Thanks guys. I think I will just start with the 2 SSDs and 2 HDDs (Raid1) and store additional archived files on external HDDs as well as the backup. I just want to ensure some redundancy in the system for the media as i don't want to be without these files should a hard drive fail in the middle of a project prior to backup!

Also is there an advantage in speed using Raid 5 if I purchased another HDD? or is it better to run two large drives in a Raid 1?

RAID 5 will not improve your speed that much.
