Im looking to create a small home data server out of a old computer. File sharing has always been an issue in my house hold and with everyone upgrading our computers, I figured this was the perfect time to upgrade our storage solution. Would I just use windows 8 server edition and get a ethernet output card or is it more difficult than that? Any help is appreciated

A normal Windows OS/Linux and use something easy like Filezilla (FTP). I use this personally and it's great for having an easy filesharing setup without the hassle of other more advanced stuff.

thanks :). I know this is a noobie question but you can output data out of a gigabit ethernet port right?

What do you mean by output data?

But if I understand you correctly then yes. A gigabit ethernet port is just capable of higher speeds than a non gigabit port. So unless your router and the client you are connecting from has gigabit, you won't really benefit from the extra capacity it can handle. That's really the only difference between a gigabit port and a "slower" one (There are even better ones than gigabit, though you probably won't need more for now). They can do all of the same stuff, just at different speeds.

By the way, what kind of computer do you have that doesn't already have ethernet? Is it a laptop? Because pretty much all motherboards would have a built-in ethernet port. (Unless you want an expansion card for higher speeds than the one on the motherboard of course)

Regular Windows install and create a network drive. I used Windows Server 2008 just because I got a free license through my Institution.

I just say gigabit by the port I have. My router is OEM so I dont expect lightning speeds xD. Plus I only get 4megabit per second download and 0.5 megabit per second upload speeds through wifi. Is LMG using 10 or 20 gigabit? I cant remember

The download speeds, are you referring to internet speed (like the one you measure on speedtest for example)? Because since you should make sure that when within the network, your server doesn't have to send/get data via the internet but just via the router. This will give you higher speeds than your internet connection (Since it doesn't have to go online to send the files. Everything is done locally behind your router.)

I think LMG is using 10 gigabit, not sure. There is a video about it on vessel right now. Should be coming to Youtube soon.

But it has an ethernet port right? (I'm not familiar with ECS so I don't quite now if it has or not)

EDIT: but if it doesn't then you can probably get a cheap ethernet expansion card. Doesn't have to be too fancy

my mobo has gigabit ethernet

Then use that. For wifi, it will not be limited by what your internet speed is. It is limited by the wireless antennas and how fast they can send/receive data. Just make sure to use something that enables you to transfer files locally (like filezilla or a network shard drive/folder). This will give you the best speeds available with your setup.
