USB 3 Headers - The Confidence Killer

Hey Everyone!

This may be really stupid but I need some reassurance with regards to USB 3 headers:

I have a Z77 Sabertooth, and just started moving everything over from my old case (CM Enforce) to the shiny new beast that is the Enthoo Pro.  Now, I've done builds before and generally feel pretty confident, until last night, trying to get the USB 3 Header into the board was a pain, the cable is almost impossible to maneuver into position as the header on the board is sideways (and jesus that cable is thick).  After much pain and blood sacrifice, I did manage to get it in, although, looking at it, I just don't think it looks right, its kinda part way in part way out and doesn't look in fully and I'm a bit worried I've damaged the board getting it in as it did flex a bit.

Has anyone else had anything similar, I won't know for certain if it works or not until I get my new h80i today and fit it tonight.

I'll also be able to throw up some images when I get home tonight if that helps out!

Thanks, and apologies if this is in the wrong place!

You're not alone. The internal USB 3.0 is a disaster. Thick and inflexible cables and flimsy connectors. And it's by standard! Yet another reason to loathe USB 3.0... If it works, I'd just leave it. It's not difficult at all to accidentally pull out the entire collar from the motherboard. And it sucks monkey balls to try and fix.

Hopefully it will then!  It really wrecked my confidence last night when I was fighting with it, hopefully i'll be able to give it a test tonight.

i've actually done that, it was a right pain in the arse to put the little blue block back onto the pins. Thankfully it still works

Jesus, how'd you manage to break it off if you don't mind me asking?

it came off with the plug, literally straight off the motherboard attyached to the USB3 plug. No sign of glue holding it down. Needless to say there's hot glue under it now

Ouch, I might just leave mine alone for the time being

You should also be careful not to bend the pins. I have the same motherboard and I accidentally bent the top two pins when I tried inserting the connector at an angle. Thankfully I fixed it by carefully bending the pins back with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Yeah, thats my biggest worry at the moment, I tried getting a look at them before I plugged the header back in, while they looked fine I couldn't really get a decent view because of it being side on.

Can you use your phone to take a picture of the header? Should be easier to fit your hand in there.

Didn't really think of that tbh, I'll give it a shot tonight although my rear camera is busted so I'll have to see if I can grab one off the front cam.
