On Windows XP, if you had a non-genuine version installed, you'd get a black screen, reminders all over the place, and some functionality wouldn't work properly. So it would kind of run like a demo version of the OS instead of the full proper version. You also may not be able to get Windows Updates to run properly, instead having to find out about them yourself and download and install them manually. Most other software I've come across over the years I haven't noticed a difference between legit vs bootlegged versions of the software on various systems, but the OS is one you should make sure you can legitimately use.

And no, I'm not suggesting you should pirate everything else. Part of the reason it ends up costing more and more for software is the amount of illegal downloading that occurs; companies have to pay the staff that have worked on it in various capacities and if too many people download it, the cost gets passed onto the people that actually buy it as an increased cost. And to me, it also feels good to have a legitimate copy rather than having to use something that I had to scrounge up from elsewhere - which may occasionally have other stuff bundled with it, such as viruses.

So yeah.. if you're putting Windows on a computer, make sure you have a legitimate license for it. It saves more headaches than you think.

What is a physical difference between genuine & pirated windows ?

In my experience:

Possible lack of access to Windows Updates that are crucial to fix bugs and security holes.

Possible actual viruses and performance issues caused by bad cracks.

Zero official microsoft support. and possible refusal of service from other Support persons.
