Worth the hassle?

Go to solution Solved by SkixAces,

Would it probably be best to wait for Win10, make a disk loader for it, load that on, then transfer?

I would wait for windows 10. i currently have windows 10 insiders preview and it is great :)

So I have a 128GB SSD and a 1TB SSHD (8GB SSD).

I have 222GB total used on the SSHD, none on the 128GB SSD.

Would it be worth the hassle to try and get my OS on the 128GB, with the risk of losing my other files on the SSHD due to insufficient space?

I would be fine re-downloading my steam games and my MSVS 13 PRO (96GB total)

I also have a 1tb external back-up drive that I can use for the steam games and MSVS, but I don't know how I would put the program back in to be usable.

Suggestions aside from getting a larger SSD and going from there?

GIGABYTE Z97MX-G516GB DDR3 | I5 4690k @ 4.4ghz | 1TB SSHD, 500GB HDD, 128GB SSD | GTX 1070 8GB | Corsair Graphite 230 | EVGA 650W | Hyper 212 EVO

Cinebench R15: 636(all cores), 127FPS

I would back up your files, install windows on the ssd, delete everyting on the hdd, and reinstall the things you need on the hdd, and copy the files you have backed up

So what you are suggesting is copy what I need to my external, fresh install my OS, then copy what's needed back in?

yeah there shouldn't be any risk of losing anything, set the SSD as boot disk, re-install windows, for steam to a backup of your games to that 1tb external you were talking about and then restore. Should be good. But yes. It is worth the hassle of moving your OS onto that 128.

And deleting everything on the hdd, so the os is gone on the hdd

Well I don't have a Win8 disk... I'm going to have to wait for the win10. I just don't want to mess up and lose my WonderShare Video... I don't have money to re-buy that again...

And would Steam auto-find my games?

And how would I go about keeping the files for MSVS to copy over and have the program still work?

For wondershare you can probably just reinstall it and login with your existing account. And for steam, do you want to copy them all to your external hdd or re-download them again? You can back up your steam games, and I am sure you can put them back after that. Steam will have to verify the game files but you'll be good after that. As for MSVS, I dont know, cause i dont know what it is xD

As Win 10 is right around the corner probably worth waiting, rather than install 8.1 and upgrading.

because of their 'free upgrade' plan I would think yo could install it just using the 8/1 key but I don't know for sure, but worth waiting to find out.

From what I understand, you get a windows update that give you the OS, alongside of a .exe or whatever to put on a bootable device to reinstall if needed.
