In my current PC build, I have an AMD A10 6800k APU, and a GTX 760. In a previous post, I remarked that I will soon be replacing the CPU, without wanting to change the processor AND motherboard.

So, after scouting YouTube reviews, I've seen that the Athlon X4 860k looks like a good choice.

Is this a good idea, or are there any better FM2+ CPUs out there?

Yes, the Athlon 860K is the best CPU for the FM2+ platform, not counting APU's.

Ok, because everyone else I've asked has said to steer away from APUs if using with discrete graphics cards.

Yes, it's not worth the extra money to buy an APU if you're not going to utilize the GPU portion of it.

What needed to be said is pretty much said, but yeah the integrated GPU isn't adding any value if you're running a dedicated GPU. The 860K will offer you the same of better performance compared to the "high" end APU's at a lower cost.

Desktop:     Core i7-9700K @ 5.1GHz all-core = ASRock Z390 Taichi Ultimate = 16GB HyperX Predator DDR4 @ 3600MHz = Asus ROG Strix 3060ti (non LHR) = Samsung 970 EVO 500GB M.2 SSD = ASUS PG279Q

Notebook:  Clevo P651RG-G = Core i7 6820HK = 16GB HyperX Impact DDR4 2133MHz = GTX 980M = 1080p IPS G-Sync = Samsung SM951 256GB M.2 SSD + Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD
