Gaming Laptop

I am going into first year engineering and am looking for an affordable gaming laptop that is also sleek and is not too bulky or tries to show off but can handle games for a time to time LAN party. For reference I live in B.C and at max am willing to spend around $1500.

Check your college as they might give you some discount for electronics.

I personally wouldn't go for the 4k version, too high res for the poor 860m

Yeah but it would not be able to run Witcher III but at 1080p it can easily run 45+ fps.

Try it but I seriously doubt it will run properly.

EDIT: I am saying if at 4k, if at 1080p then you will be perfectly fine.

Eh, I guess you're right. For OP: This one is the one for you : http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Y50-Laptop-Generation-i7-4720HQ/dp/B00TC3EJ7Q/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1437156319&sr=1-4&keywords=Lenovo+Y50 however if you really want to play 4k on not so high demanding games, get the one I recommended before.

Much much better. A friend of mine has the same one. It's quite good but needs regular dusting else it starts getting procedurally warmer.

I have been using this laptop for almost a year now (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231949) and I love it, it has been great for everyday use and great for gaming. Go with the 950m and the 4720HQ and you will be set for most games that you want to run. Some people have reported poor warranty or quality with this laptop, I have not experienced any of that yet but you can take that into consideration. However I really recommend getting a laptop or two and trying them out for 20 days and then returning the one that you do not like. I have done this before with computer components and loved it. However I would recommend that you check the refund policy of where you buy your laptop from, so that you can return it without paying ridiculous fees. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or respond in the forum.

Seriously an 8GB SSD?!?!?! wtf is the use of that

it's a hybrid drive. It has 8GB of solid state storage and 1TB of mechanical storage. The drive automatically detects which files are used most frequently (OS files and stuff like that), and transfers them from the mechanical storage to the solid state memory. This gives you great boot times and shorter load times for frequently used apps, but you still have the storage of a purely mechanical drive.

The EUROCOM Shark 4 looks like a good deal is there any downsides like size and weight?

The Eurocom Shark 4 is based on the Clevo N150SD/N151SD barebones. The only difference in these two models is the finish. Clevos generally have really good build quality and I have a P650SG and I simply love it, especially the keyboard which has this tactile feel to it. The N15XSD also uses the same keyboard as the P65XSx series.  This machine weighs in at about 2.5kg, which is very normal for a laptop this size and is about 28.5mm thick.

What do you think is the best config?

Config-wise, this is what I would choose.

Display: Full HD IPS Matte display

RAM: 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz

OS: Windows 8.1

M.2 SSD: 120GB Samsung 850 EVO

HDD 1: 1TB 7200RPM SATA3 Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000

WiFi Card: Intel 7265AC

And the rest just leave it as it is. The total is 1362 CAD.

What is the better option the M5 Pro for a bit more or Shark 4? I already have a gaming PC so I feel the Shark 4 will be a solid choice for University and should handle the programs that I will need for engineering and get me through the occasional gap in classes. Can you only order the Shark 4 through Eurocom directly?

I have the same machine as the M5 Pro, it is really a great machine. I think the Shark 4 would be a machine good enough for your needs. I think ordering through Eurocom directly is the most reliable way.
