Recommendations for a cheap Linux server host?

Have a small forum that I would like to move from GoDaddys free windows hosting to Linux.

Looking for something cheap and reliable, as IMHO it would be hard to find worse the GoDaddy after 2 years of dealing with them.

Digital Ocean is a good choice. I would recommend Dacentec if you are targeting the US, they offer pretty affordable VPS servers, and everyone I know said they are pretty good and stable. I personally hadn't used them but I am planing to.

Wait do you mean webhosting in the traditional sense as in shared hosting and do you want to move to a different provider that uses Linux servers? Or do you want to set up your own vps/dedicated server?

Recycle an old computer.  (Trolololol)

Seriously though, what type of forum are you running (vBulletin, etc)?  Sometimes going to the services forum you can find discounted hosting through their partner's.  Worth taking a look.

Digital Ocean, especially if you're a student since you can head to https://education.github.com for a $100 credit. Would appreciate the use of my referral link also :)

Ramnode is also great, use the code IRC33 for a recurring 33% discount.

Use the free tier of AWS. You get 750 instance-hours of VM time per month for free, which means you can have a single VM running all the time and not have to pay for it. You also get 5GB of S3 storage and some DB throughput.

That would be sufficient for a truly small forum (1 core, 1 GB memory). Depending on your sizing you might need more.

I'm happily using asphostportal.com for about 6 months. They have stable and solid web hosting service, they support windows and linux hosting well. The pricing is reasonable and everything is excellent. Support is active 24 hours and you can reach them easily by using ticket, email or live chat. They have responded to any of my support questions in few minutes and not hours. Just try them!
