Side by Side config error

Go to solution Solved by Robin88,

Can you try installing the latest drivers for Vista please? 344.75 are seriously outdated and you might have better luck with 353.30 instead.

I get why you want to use an older version of Windows for older games, but have you tried installing the games with Compatibility mode? Admittedly I haven't tried a great deal of games, but most of them work quite well in Compatibility mode for me, and it might be better for you to try that instead. But give the newer drivers a go first, and if that doesn't work then try Compatibility mode instead if you haven't already.

I just installed windows vista 64 bit on my computer, and most applications work. However, when I try to launch the driver setup for my GTX 970, for which the file is called

"344.75-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql"

it says

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."

The general section of the application event log event of this says

"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Users\Ben\Downloads\344.75-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis."

Stop using vista.

That's not even a joke, just stop.

I know, I don't like it either, but old games on new OS's crash a lot.

You can run them in a virtual machine running windows vista. No need to go full on archaic here.

When I tried that it could not access DirectX.

You have to enable the 3D rendering in the virtual machine settings.

I did try compatibility mode, and it failed. However, I tried 353.30, and it worked! Thank you!
