Which GPU should I choose?

Go to solution Solved by failwheeldrive,

I would like to game in the highest settings with an average of 60+ frames. Most reviews have been getting around 40~50

Two 770s are more than enough to run every game at 60+fps at 1440p.  The only exceptions would be things like Metro Last Light or Crysis 3 with 8xMSAA.  That level of anti aliasing is pointless at high resolution anyway.  My single Titan handles absolutely everything at ultra settings and low aa at 2560x1440.  Two 770s are substantially more powerful than a single Titan.

So, I was planning on building a gaming computer, but I don't know which graphics card setup I should do.

A) SLI 780

B) SLI 3-way 770 (The smiley face is supposed to be a "B)"

C) 9970 Xfire

I plan on waiting for the 9970's to come out no matter which outcome. Thanks for the help!

I heard that the sli 780 was a better choice than the 3 way sli 770. Not too much is know about the 9970 xfire. XD

i'd wait for the 9000s as you've said and by then i hope there's driver update for amd and we can kinda see where things are going.

funny that you should ask this whilst you already got the answer: wait for 9000s and see if it's any good, otherwise it'd be nvidia again :)

Check out the build: Used to be Obot, now Lilith

3 sli doesn't scale well.

What kind of display setup are you gaming on?

I know this may sound stupid to some of you... But I was going to game on a tv (1080p), I plan on sitting on a couch far away so a monitor wouldn't really cut it.

tried this before, if you don't mind the report lag (pretty massive even compared to standard 5ms monitor) - i guess it's a cool idea.

I personally can't take it, when i did this i ended up carrying a monitor then clone the display so I can game without the input lag.

Screen size doesn't matter. Resolution is what counts.

These setups are ridiculously overkill.

A single 7950/7970/770 can max out most games at 1080p.

While all those choices are reasonable, if the PC you plan on hooking up to the TV is reasonably far away from you when in use (more than 5 ft, at least), then the massive sound from the dual 9970s wouldn't be much of a bother.

But really, all those choices are fine. As someone said above, triple SLI doesn't really cut it compared to the other options.

I know they are over kill. I forgot to mention that I was also planning for high FPS gamming, and that I plan on upgrading to a 1440p tv (Or higher res) when I get the money. I just wanted to pick out the gaming PC before I had to upgrade it for higher res. screens.

I actually found this article http://us.hardware.info/reviews/4632/geforce-gtx-700-series-sli-review-geforce-gtx-760770780-in-sli-and-3-way-sli which goes through each setup and reports the frames

Don't waste the cash if you're just going to be gaming in 1080p.  You'd get a far better gaming experience from two 770s and a 1440p monitor than three 770s at 1080p.  Trust me, I was gaming at 1080p with my Titan for months, and it was such a waste of cash.  If you're going to be spending over a grand on graphics hardware you could at least back it up with a Korean 2.5k monitor :)

Can't say, last I heard there wasn't a solid release window so I don't know how long the wait would be.  There's definitely the potential for a huge payoff in terms of performance though.  Then again, they could end up crippled by driver issues like the 7xxx cards were last year.  I guess we'll see in a few months how the 9970 compares to Nvidia's current offerings.

I heard that it will be released september ~ october. I think I will get sli 780's because I have the money for it. But for just the best overall it should be 770's
