i3 Window Manager Ricing

Hey guys! I (finally)installed Arch Linux yesterday and so far, everything has been great. I've been testing out different environments, using Cinnamon right now. I've been looking at two window managers, awesome, and i3. So far I really like i3, but by default it looks ugly, in my opinion. I've been trying to get something like http://i.imgur.com/HBFDssZ.png or http://i.imgur.com/nqbX696.png, but I'm not sure where to start. I've looked at the Arch Wiki article on ricing, but it's very confusing to me. if anyone could help me out that would be great. Thanks!
