So I've not used one, just looking at benchmarks and specs and the like. I'll be honest, I'm not super impressed.

One thing I kind of don't understand is the 8GB VRAM. This seems WAY overkill for pretty much all scenarios. I suppose you could say it's 'futureproof' (God I hate that term), but it's a lot of extra manufacturing cost that could have been put elsewhere.

Anyone else see the value in this monstrous amount of VRAM?

It's still a power hog, though. So I think I'll stay with nVidia.  :D

Also, holy shit, they're priced really competitively (even though they're a rebrand).

That stupid amount of vram makes sense for crossfire. That's pretty much it.

I think the pieces are completely fair as the 390x is $430 and trade blows with the $500 980 at 1080p and pulls ahead in 4k. The 390 comes at $329 which is a great price. The 380x comes at the $199 price point of the 280x and the 960 (which the 380x is much better).

The vram is for insanely ridiculous surround setups (like the triple ultra-wide vid Linus did using the 3 Vapor-X 290Xs). Aside from that not much use; but hey, the Titan X has f***ing 12GB and nobody complains about that.

you also have the power rewuirements, my bro has a silverstone 500w 80+ silver psu, which is great, it could power a gtx 980 without a problem, but it handle any AMD card above the r9 280/r9 380 due to their high power reuqirements. Its not worth it to buy a new one when already have a very good one

Really? The benchmarks I saw from Digital Storm gave the impression that it was pretty much equal (even slightly behind) the 980. Not to mention that it's still the hot, power hungry card that the 290X was. The 390(non-X) and 380 are very competitively priced, I'll be interested to see how they perform.

But that's a $1000/£900 card, go big or go home.  :D

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/69646-amd-r9-390x-8gb-performance-review.html

"With higher core clocks and an epic amount of memory bandwidth, the R9 390X is able to leave the reference R9 290X in its dust and even manages to outmuscle the GTX 980 in nearly every test.

All of this has been achieved without a massive increase in power consumption or even switching to a completely different architecture. To me, that shows AMD has achieved their goals while still living within their somewhat limited financial means. They just don’t have the money to introduce a completely new volume-focused architecture on a manufacturing process that will soon be phased out in favor of 14nm. The high-cost, low volume Fiji design is a perfect testing ground for AMD’s bold vision of the future and that’s what it is being used for." -Hardware Canucks

380x doesn't exist and is just another rebrand (285), the 280x is faster than the 380 you were presumably talking about.
