Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of a pair of good passive speakers? For not too expensive..

I got an amp for free (mcfarlow amp600) (sometimes called Ibiza amp600) and want to find some decent speakers that will sound ok.

Im looking for about £60ish around there... (for 2)

Also, i found a deal on a Pioneer passive sub for £5! that is a steal, if it works or not i dont care, its worth a try...

will i be able to power that from this amp? and can i get 2 speakers and this sub working somehow? the sub is 8ohms 100w i think. the amp is 2x320@8ohms and 2x480@4ohms.

How can i do this?

Thanks

Gershy13

that's a pretty darn powerful amp. unfortunately although there is a way to power that sub with that amp using a crossover and then parallelling the outputs of the crossover, it would be really terribly hacked together and would probably make something, somewhere in the universe explode.

as far as speakers are concerned, I don't even know what retailers to start looking at in the UK other than amazon.

Crossover Freq (Hz) The highest point at which bass is produced from. Use this figure to match to your speakers.

35 - 2000

it says that...

You surely can. Just adjust the volume (or gain structure) so as not to overdrive them. How loud are you looking at playing?

Here's a pretty good pair for that price:

The nominal impedance of that subwoofer is too low to put in parallel with your other speakers (at least without a crossover). If you really want to put it in and not add a separate amplifier, you'd need to build a passive crossover for best results (and maybe get 2 of those subs for balanced channel loading). You may still need to equalize the output afterwards.

If you're dead set on using that sub, I suggest using your existing amp for the subwoofers then get another amp for your main speakers (one that has pre-outs preferably for amp daisy-chaining).

nahh, i skipped the sub, because i couldnt drive em, dont have an amp that has 3 channel, so ill have to buy an amp, so... yh i left it

the sub is actually 4ohms.

Would those speakers be any good for normal music and monitoring of editing audio? would like it to have some bass. and i dont plan to put them too loud, just enough for a medium sized room at normal volume

thanks, my bro told me that one of his friends said you cant put lower wattage speakers to an higher amp cos itll blow em... lol

Ill look in to speakers, but if you can suggest some in the UK (or thomann.de) that are good for music listening (with a bit of punchy bass) and monitoring audio (we record a lot of songs...)

Thanks

The sub is indeed rated as a 4 ohm nominal load, but if you run it in parallel with a set of speakers, the effective load on the amp will be much lower than that.

These are forgiving speakers that can compensate for the typically aggressive sound of some PA gear (like your amp). They are more for music listening than monitoring. Though they can be used for monitoring in a squeeze, studio monitor speakers are much better suited for that.

If you can spare some cash, these are more neutral sounding than the Missions:

Will you use a PC as a source? You can equalize either of these speakers to approximate monitoring sets (you have enough amp headroom anyway). An RTA would be needed to do this.

That being said, you can also equalize a monitoring set so that they are forgiving and enjoyable with multiple genres. Monitoring speakers will cost you more though, especially since they are normally sold per piece.

The speakers I mentioned should be okay if you don't need real monitoring speakers. They perform very well for the price. A software EQ on your Mac or PC should handle any major response issue. How's your room's acoustics by the way?

You can run a software EQ on your phone or buy a physical equalizer if you really want to boost the low end.

whats an RTA?

Real Time Analyzer. You can try to tune it without an RTA (normally quite roughly) if you have a good ear for it.

Thanks, which ones? The tannoy or the other ones? I'll have a look into a

legit eq, but it should be OK...

We are willing to spend up to £80ish

anything will do, decent monitoring speakers, and a good bit of headroom for an eq.

fairly loud, (the louder the better ;)) (since it is a nearly 1000w amp...)

Bookshelf speakers generally don't get very loud (unless you have a small room). They get loud enough for enjoyable listening. Don't push them to dance club / rock concert volume levels, as they will distort and deteriorate much quicker.

If you want a really loud set, then look at PA speakers. Those in this price are pretty terrible in quality though, in my opinion.

Im looking at the JBL Control 1,  the tannoy mercury v1, and the Roth Oli RA1

the ones look good, which one out of them would you recommend?

I'm mainly looking for music playing, but will also use them for a tiny bit of monitoring... i like my bass, so if i can atleast eq them to sound with some good bass that will be nice...

Thanks
