Internet Connection Types/Network Connection Types?

Hi, I've had a few things on my mind lately ever since I've finally been able to get my own PC thoughts going and flowing and I've been having a few questions about connection for back in the early days with internet and the ancient days of dial up and whatnot hahaha. So my question is, how did internet connections start off with and how have they changed over time in general? (You don't have to like type an insane amount of paragraphs you can link and what not I'm just generally curious.) 

 

(What gave me one of these questions recently was when I was looking at one my ancient computers I saw that it had a port for a phone line "like" connection.) - was that used for a network connection at some point in time?
