Reshade vs sweetFx ?

Ok so a while ago I tried sweetfx on win8.1 and it didn't work and I didn't do much research into it but tried Reshade/Sweetfx for Witcher 3 with CineFx from sweetfx website and it works without any trouble. Now my question is, can I use the Reshade installation files and custom sweetFx profiles in other games or do they need only sweetFx ? Not sure exactly what reshade is and if its ok to use it instead of sweetfx in older titles. Can someone enlighten me ? :-) thanks in advance.
