pcie adapter for ssd

Go to solution Solved by Peter Vaughan Truslow,

So i have an old x58 mobo,  http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X58_ProE.html#hero-overview and once I found that intel 750 is not compatible I researched a bunch of pcie adapters.  I want to put two 840evo in raid  0 and I want to circumvent my sata 2 bottleneck for a pcie2.0 adapter. I'm looking at the apricorn velocity solo/duo http://www.apricorn.com/vel-duox2.html  on their site it says 800MB/s for raid 0 on either. I guess it is only more expensive for ease of mount.  Other ones I am looking at http://www.siig.com/it-products/controllers-storage/serialata/pcie/sata-6gb-s-3i-1-ssd-hybrid-pcie.html  or just sata 6 adapter  http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Express-Controller-HyperDuo-Tiering/dp/B00BUC3N74/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1432001321&sr=1-1&keywords=sata+3+pcie+adapter+raid

My questions:

-Is ther apricorn ssd mount just expensive for ease of mounting?

-Any speed difference between pcie 2.0 sata 6 adapter card and apricorn duo card?

-Is there any benefit for the starteck pcie adapter "hardware raid"? What does supports hardware raid through bios mean?

I want to spend as little as possible to get around my sata 2 bottleneck for raid 0. Any recommendations are welcome.

to answer your questions

yes it's probably convenience factor that's boosting the price

no, there shouldn't be a difference if both have the same RAID capabilities

hardware raid has it's benifits, but I feel like you can find a cheaper 2 port Raid 0 capable card.

Why would the 750 (PCIe version) not be compatible?

I posted earlier http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/369078-intel-750-compatible/#entry4997427 and was told due to my old motherboard intel 750 couldn't be used as a secondary drive without nvme driver and having legacy bios.

Could you suggest a good pcie 2.0 sata 6 adapter card(only need 2 sata plugs) that would work with raid 0 for boot?

this appears to have similar capabilities

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124060

it supports only RAID 0,1,and 10 because these RAID schemes don't require powerful controllers. I can't speak on performance personally, but I have good faith in it.

edit. hold on, reading through reviews, maybe I can find something better

found this in a review. looks good enough if you do this: "- When installing onto a mobo with older Marvell 9128 Marvell controller (i.e. X58 era), I found it best to disable the older controller in the mobo BIOS. Otherwise, CTRL-M to get into the Marvell BIOS didn't work properly."

here's a second option. they both look decent. I'd recommend reading through the reviews for both before deciding

X58 does not support NVMe. NVME requires PCIe Gen 3 X4 but the only supports Gen 2.0. Even if it did work, it would have a speed handicap.

I would suggest something like this for a cheap option

http://www.amazon.com/HighPoint-RocketRAID-620-PCI-Express-Controller/dp/B0034CQR4O

Supports all you need. Make sure you connect it to a PCIe port that it directly link to the X58 chipset for best performance.

Thanks for the quick replies, since there is no speed difference I'll go with one of the two sata 6 adapter cards you linked. What do I disable in bios, the raid controller? I'm guessing it will include a hardware raid guide, once that is setup is there anything to know when booting or does windows treat it like any other raid? THanks again!

Interesting... so this means that even with H97 if you're using a GPU you can't use NMVe

it seems you may need to disable the stock SATA controller. that cards has 4 ports, so it should probably be enough for the system, but I'd try to get into the RAID setup without disabling anything first, as you might get lucky

booting should be perfectly normal once you get setup. windows will treat it as one drive.

if you have any trouble, PM me and I'll try to help.

good luck!

Right no nvme support, I would be okay if intel 750 could be used even with the bottleneck on my x58 board because I am buying a new ssd and sata 6 pcie adapter card. But it's a toss up if my board would even recognize nvme.

Um, if I did have to disable stock sata controller would that make any hard drive not plugged into the sata 6 adapter not work?  I currently have like 5 into my mobo. Would a 2 port sata 6 raid card be safer?

You definitely have enough PCIe lanes on X58 for bandwidth (Even at PCIe 2.0 X4). Whether you BIOS would support it is another matter. You could contact the manufacturer to see what they say. I have my doubts.

Interesting... so this means that even with H97 if you're using a GPU you can't use NMVe

You could plug it into your PCIe 3.0 slot in lieu of a graphics card but defeats the purpose if you need your graphics card.

Your other 2.0 lanes are connected via the PCH so it comes back to the same "if it did work, it may be speed handicapped."

I'm no expert on the subject just going off what i have researched online since the 750 drives have been released.

probably not. I didn't see that issue reported for the second RAID card, so I'd try that. worst case scenario is that it doesn't work and you can send it back.

ok so go with one of the sata 3 pci cards with hardware raid supported, is that preferred over a simple sata 3 pcie adapter and use motherboard bios for raid. Just unsure of difference between hardware raid and using software. Once that is cleared up I'll research reviews and Mark this as solved, thanks all for the help.

RAID in the BIOS is just hardware raid controllers that are built into the motherboard. that add in card that says it uses the motherboard BIOS for raid, is really showing a RAID setup screen before boot, just like most any RAID card.

hardware RAID is much higher performance with no CPU overhead, and will run into fewer issues when being used as the boot device.
