Storage Life Check?

Hi, I was wondering what I could use to check the life of some storage devices I have, SSDs, Hard Drives, and some USB drives. Furthermore, how would I be able to check when I should change them?

Hey Yames,

Usually every manufacturer has a diagnostic tool that provides a pretty good information about your drive. If you don't feel comfortable with reading S.M.A.R.T. status, you can always post it here and someone would help you out. Also there are some articles on the internet that describe what is what in the S.M.A.R.T. status. I find this one to be particularly good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

Each manufacturer should have a tool listed on their website. For example, Western Digital recommends using WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool for the WD drives (here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PCXlbq). Tools can work on other branded drives but the tool provided by the manufacturer knows the firmware best and should give you the most accurate data.
Also there are a number of third-party tools available on the internet. I can't really recommend any of them since I am a Western Digital representative, but I'm sure the guys here on the forum can recommend some. :)

This is the Disk Management where you can configure and partition your drives. It does not provide information about the actual health of your drive. Seeing that you have a HP Tools partition, I suppose you have a HP computer. I would suggest going on their website and checking for the recommended tool for checking your drive's health. Also if you open device manager, you can see your drive's model number and look up its manufacturer. You can get the tool from the manufacturer's website as well. :)
