Try Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Sound. There you should be able to see your audio devices and disable and enable them as you please.

You can follow what SageC said or try getting it out of there? Get a pair of pliers and pull it out.

That's a great way to break a good many things on a laptop.

Well theres already a connector in the laptop... Why would he leave it in there? If you break it trying to take it out what does it have to loose? Your logic makes no sense.

My point is that there is a fairly good chance that, in addition to rendering the already useless headphone jack permanently useless, he could break quite a few other things on his computer in addition to the headphone jack. That's why I say that he shouldn't try to pull it out.

What else would he break? Maybe scratch the laptop a bit? I still don't understand where you are going with this. What is he going to do, have an arm spasm and break the screen? lol

Depending on how ports are arranged, he could very easily mess up some USB ports, or outputs for external monitors. Otherwise, yeah, he could scratch up the laptop, or break some of the plastic (if it is indeed plastic) on the outside of his laptop, which can cause issues with other components.

You can f*** up a laptop pretty badly by sticking pliers into it. In a laptop, the whole thing is stuffed with hardware. He could scratch/break/short circuit the motherboard, break a port, screw up the plastic/aluminum around the port, break the keyboard, the possibilities are endless.

He is just pulling out a jack in a port with pliers. You won't break anything else.

Unless half of it is broken off and all the way inside the jack. Then you have to shove the pliers in pretty far, which could easily break something.

This might help you out, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19509588It looks like one solution was to reinstall the sound drivers, and another post said that you may have to do some registry edits.

It may have something to do with needing a more generic driver for the sound than what comes shipped with your laptop.
