ok so i recently bought a prebuilt for gamming and yes i now know why that was retarted to say the least but now ive saved up a decent amount of cash and need some direction i will mostly use the computer for 1080p gamming may go to 1440p but not for some time and i wanted to reuse my i3 4160 @3.6Ghz and later upgrade to an i5 or i7 with the lga 1150 ok so my first question which mobo do i pick thats a good board but budget friendly the two i keep comming back to are the msi gamming 5 and the heroVII or is there a better choice around this price point?

Also is there a major difference between the z87 and z97 that reflects the extra cost?

You'll want Z97 if you're running a Haswell Refresh chip out of the box. It'll also support upcoming Broadwell chips when you upgrade later.

The Hero VII is a waste of money. The MSI Gaming 5 is around the sweet spot range. Other options around there include the AsRock Z97 Extreme4/Extreme6, EVGA Z97 FTW and Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK

z97 has support for broadwell which i don't think is really worth the upgrade. You can also overclock a lot better on z97.

Z97 doesn't make a difference in overclocking capability over Z87. It's just that Devil's Canyon are better overclockers then their non-refresh counterparts.

Didn't know that actually.
