PCIe Lanes

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

Thanks for all the help, just one more, question. What would the cards run at with one in a 16x slot, one in a 4x slot, and one in a 1x slot if the cpu can only support 16x

If the last slot is 2.0, it'll go through the B85 PCH("southbridge"). Same goes with the x1 slot because they're all PCIe 2.0. Therefore, your graphics card will gain the full 16 lanes provided by the onboard PCIe 3.0 controller.

Hey guys, need some help,

My motherboard has two PCIe 16x slots, two 1x slots, and two PCI slots. My processor is the Core i5 4690, which has support for 16 PCIe lanes. One of the 16x slots is connected directly to the processor, giving it the potential for 16x. The other slot is limited to 4x due to the chipset, which is the B85 chipset. I can run a GPU in that slot in the 4x with only a 4% performance loss (give or take a bit). In that case this motherboard is capable of running a 2-way crossfire setup, however, my question is what would happen if I were to put a wifi card in one of the 1x slots. Does anyone know if I can run these cards in this setup, if it's even possible. My mobo is the G1 Sniper B6 if that helps anything.

Thanks

PCIe x1 slots and PCIe 2.0 x4 slots go through the B85 PCH. Therefore, nothing will happen to your config with your graphics card.

I believe that the 4x is also a pcie 3.0, how would the lanes be split between the two graphics cards?

What motherboard do you have? I can check the specs for you.

the Gigabyte G1 Sniper B6

I've done some research, but there isn't a lot of info, and nothing I've seen says anything about 3.0 or 2.0.

Thanks though

You're correct - it doesn't say specifically, but it does state that the top PCIe x16 slot conforms to the 3.0 standard. Therefore I believe that the second slot is 2.0.

Forgive me, I'm kinda new to this. You can crossfire the cards with one 3.0 and one 2.0, correct?

Yes you can do that.
