i have about $350 to spend on video cards, so the dual 960s are about 50$ out of budget, but i am willing to do it if the benefits are visible.

Single 970, many games don't support (or have poor support for) SLI. Also SLI creates micro stuttering issues from what I hear

Nude Fist 1: i5-4590-ASRock h97 Anniversary-16gb Samsung 1333mhz-MSI GTX 970-Corsair 300r-Seagate HDD(s)-EVGA SuperNOVA 750b2

Name comes from anagramed sticker for "TUF Inside" (A sticker that came with my original ASUS motherboard)

i see all these people complaining about sli yet most everyone on this forum recommends 2 970's over 1 980

because that is a 2nd tear card vs a 3rd tear card

Wrong. And wrong.

Most games support (well) SLI.

And SLI only leads to microstuttering in low framerate scenarios.

Don't spread bad information.

Most games do. Some don't, and some have problems with SLI. Still would be better to get a single 970 to just avoid all of those possible problems completely

Microstuttering is the differentiation of frame timing. At high frame rates you barely notice it, if at all. At low ones, the difference is clear.

Ever heard of Minecraft?

Yeah that game that runs at 500 fps and still manages to have a very noticeable stutter 20 times/second, that game.

Always best rule is to buy the best single card you can afford in most cases.

I only get stuttering when the fps drops really fast (far cry 4) but then again I have a g-sync monitor.  :)
