Hello everyone,

I am about to build my new computer and am stuck a little bit between the 1150 Socket and the 2011-3. I plan to use the computer mainly for gaming but am not hardcore oriented, my main concern is that i maybe want to switch CPU or upgrade RAM at one point in maybe three years and if I still get a decent one for the 1150 socket. The general build would look like:

1150 Socket:

Motherboard: AsRock Z97 Extreme 4

CPU: I7 4771 3.5 Ghz

GPU: either the gtx 960 or the R9 280x

Ram 16 GB

2011-3 Socket:

Motherboard: X99-A

CPU: I7 5820k with 3.3 Ghz

The problem is that the 2011-3 built costs around 300 bucks more so I am not sure if I should invest that money.

Of course any other comments are welcome as well however I would like not to get off budget too much as the 2011-3 Socket already reaches the limit for it ;)

Thanks for your help!

I would wait for the release of Skylake.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I3 4150, Intel HD graphics, corsair CX750M, 4gb ram, Asus H81M-E, corsair 230T, Intel stock cooler WD Green 2TB Gigabyte 550TI

Why you shouldn't trust Gpu or Cpu boss Click on this I dare you!

why not i5 4690k, 8gb ram, r9 290/290x/970?

what are you using your pc for?

The thing is I mainly plan to use it for gaming on a 1920X1080 setting. I thought that the R9 280x would do the job and the upgrade to 290/290x would only be significant if I plan to game on a 4k monitor. So I could increase CPU a little bit with the budget.

But correct me if I am wrong with that, has been a while since the last computer I put together.

My old computer died on me and all I am left now is a mac laptop (not thereat fun for gaming ;)), and that happened three months ago. So I would prefer not to wait half a year until I can afford Skylake or it is released.

If your only using it for gaming an i5 4690k is enough the extra cost of an i7 isn't worth it you will only get 2-3 fps more. Get an i5 4690k with a GTX 970 and 8GB of RAM and a decent Z97 motherboard as 2011-3/X99 would be overkill for gaming.

If you are just doing gaming get an I5.

Great, Thanks for your help guys.

I wasn't sure how I can go about it but it seems like I should invest a little bit more into the GPU instead of the CPU! And with this the 2011-3 Socket is out the window as well :)

Along with the other people in this thread I agree with that i7's offer no benefits over i5's for just gaming. Save yourself some money and go get the 4690k. I would pair this with a GTX970, I have one and it is one dream of a card. 8GB RAM should do you fine provided you don't like your chrome tabs ;)

Buying X99 isn't futureproofing if you want to upgrade in a couple of years. The 2011-3 is just Intel trying to hold out until their delayed new platform is released. It's a dead end imho. That and both the motherboard and DDR4 cost premium because it's brand new and the prices will drop when the change from DDR3 -> DDR4 take of along the road.

I had a 970 and it whined constantly, I may have a gtx 780 now, but I would say wait a month or 2 for the r9 300 series or get a 290x
