Is it great for a old IBM Thinkpad ? Would accept any opinions about Linux Mint or any linux based OS

In my opinion, Mint is pretty trash with the cinnamon desktop environment. Cinnamon is super laggy on even a high end setup like mine.

I'd recommend you go with debian and just install gnome from the terminal.

I have no problems with Cinnamon on my system (Xeon E3 1275, 8GB RAM).

OP: I see no harm in giving Mint a go. It's one of my favorite distributions for general use. Worst case scenario you just install a lighter DE or a new distro.

I was in the same boat before but since I clean install Mint last week, I saw that everything was corrected !

No more lag at all and no memory leak... Before, the simple fact of moving a window frame was almost freezing

the PC, now everything is fluid. Same with Ubuntu by the way, before, it was a pain just browsing the internet, now

it's like Windows, normal...

Give it a try, Mint 17.1 is now my favorite distro...
