Hi

To secure my business's data, I have been looking into getting a freenas box build.

I do however still have some questions/doubts about the hardware:

What do I have at the moment:

- A thumb drive :P

What do I need it to do:

- Serve as a backup appliance for application data, OS'es and a camera monitoring kit.

- Would like to run some vm's / jails that would host things like a webpage or run programs.

What hardware am I thinking about:

Situation 1:

- Quadcore Xeon

- 16 gb of ECC memory

- 4 HDD in a raidZ2/ raidZ3 array

Situation 2:

- Asrock C2750D4I (Octa core Avaton on ITX board)

- 16 or more gb of ECC memory

- As many drives as budget allows.

So what would be better for this situation: A quadcore xeon or an 8 core avaton?

I can't but feel that the Xeon will outperform the 8 core. :/

That time I saved Linus' WiFi pass from appearing on YouTube:

I would say situation 2 uses probably less power
