I'm using wifi and the router is downstairs but my mom is hooked up via eithernet so i did speedtest on both off our computers. Would having powerline to my computer help my download speed? o: i get ~2mb/s over wifi right now

well you get 12mBs and she gets 30mBs.

powerline would help but the effiency of it varies depending on how old your house is.

i can get 400 mbs comp to comp using mine so powerline is definately better than wifi but isn t as good as cat5

Yes powerline is WAY better than Wireless 802.11n however with the emergence of 802.11ac that delivers Gigabit speeds through wireless that would be the way to go.

By the way to go i mean 802.11ac is the best fastest wireless choice right now unless you get CAT6

Powerline WILL be more stable than WiFi for 99% of the cases. But as stated above, it also depends on the quality of your electrical installation and if you have 380V on the same electrical panel. Make sure you get high speed powerline devices, not those old 80Mbit/s ones.

wifi ac has trouble doing faster than 500mbps with any kind of interference (5ghz and all) and it cost 200$ for a router plus 100$ for an adapter.

it isn t worth it for op where 2.4ghz doesn t have enough power to reach his pc

well we added onto our house a few years back and the router is in the newer part of the house so has newer electrical but my room is in the older part so the powerline will go from newer to older electrical, and the house was built some 200 years ago >_<

Just make sure both rooms are on the same electrical panel and you should be fine. Give it a try first if you have a friend with 2 powerline adapters, just in case.

I have heard that powerline does cause an increase in ping (latency)

It may in certain cases, but you usually end up with consistent ping, which is good. The problem with sharing a medium between networking and electricity is that you can get interferences from electrical devices in rare cases.
