I have 2 titan xs in sli and I get poor gpu utilization is games.  Sometimes it drops down to 50% for no apparent reason, as there is no cpu bottleneck (I'm running 4970k).  What would be causing this poor gpu utilization?

I have:

4790k overclocked to 4.6ghz

asus maximus VII forumula mobo

Corsair 1500i psu

16 gb ram

titan x sli

nvidia surround at 7680 x 1440

It's pcie gen 3 8 X 8, due to the z97 issue.  I was told this wouldn't be a problem, but maybe it is?  Somebody else on the forum said the titan x should run fine off pcie 8, is that true?

It's not a PCIE bottleneck. What game are you playing? Many games are very poorly optimized for SLI, and if so the second card will be hardly used, if at all.

it's happened in multiple games.  GTA V being the latest.

I run msi afterburner and both cards are being used

Very true; there is still ample bandwidth.

Is Vsync enabled?

Do you have v-sync enabled or capped fps somehow (Afterburner / precisionX and so on have this feature)

PCI-E 3.0 @ x8 probably be saturated if your trying to run them full blast.. A GTX 690 just about saturated PCI-E 2.0 (About a 4% difference from x16 to x8 in that case as 3.0 is doubvle the bandwidth of 2.0) but you should get past 50% usage even before you saw an effect.

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

No v-sync isn't enabled.  It's runs at full speed sometimes, but not always.  It just at certain times, which appear random that the game uses like 38% -50% gpu utilization.  This happens at 1080p and 6K.  It doesn't matter the resolution

Download DDU, uninstall the graphics card drivers then reinstall.

Ok, I'll try that.  Thanks

I can't guarantee it will work, but this is the nature of troubleshooting; you try potentially relevant solutions. :)
