Someone I know wants me to build them a PC that can stream videos over LAN, Play HD movies, browse the web really well, doesn't cost more than $400 and they wont have to upgrade it for around 5 years. The processor I was considering is one that commonly gets recommended for extreme budget gaming builds, the Pentium G3258. I know it's a decent little chip but I don't know how well it will perform in 5 years even if it's just web browsing and streaming movies. And with the RAM I'm considering two 4GB chips but I don't know if 8GB of RAM will be good in 5 years even for just web browsing and streaming. Pretty much my whole problem with this build is predicting how well the user experience will be 5 years from now. Also I know the people that I'm building this for pretty well and it's a certainty that someone will be streaming videos off it while someone else uses it to browse the web.
This is the build as it's looking right now
Windows 8.1 key $100
Processor: Pentium G3258 $70
Case/PowerSupply: Apex mj-16 micro ATX case with 230w power supply $40
RAM: G.SKILL ns 8GB(2x4) 1600MHz CL11 $52
HardDrive: Seagate Barrucuda 1TB $50
Motherboard: biostar h81mhv3 micro atx motherboard $40
They don't need new speakers, mouse/keyboard or a monitor and I'm giving them my DVD Burner because I haven't used it since I installed windows well over a year ago.
Right now it adds up to a grand total of $352 give or take. Where should I put the extra $48? I'm thinking it should go towards a Power supply, the ones that come with cases are usually junk, and maybe an after market CPU cooler for some overclocking or maybe just putting most of it into upgrading the G3258 to an i3. Also I have a little 60GB SSD I want to give to them as a gift for the boot drive but I don't know how well they'll be able to remember to download/install things on a drive other than the default system drive(They're a little tech illiterate but do know how to download things and install programs). I don't want them to have 800GB free on the HDD but the SSD is completely full with things that should be on the HDD like programs, songs, movies etc. I know you can change default download folders with Firefox but is there a way to change the default program installation drive? The 60GB SSD would make this computer feel really fast but I feel like it's small size would be more trouble than it's worth down the line.
Any and all suggestions and tips are welcomed, except switching Windows out for a Linux distro hahahaha and also I'm not going to pirate Windows.

Give you're friend some advise and tell him that not many PC's that cost 400 at the moment are going to stand the test of time in the technology race, with new stuff coming out all the time, everything is always getting beefier and beefier.

Been playing on a laptop for 6 years, I play Dota 2 with 10fps. Some might say this is impossible, I say its just annoying

I don't think it's that unreasonable for a $400 PC to be able to browse the web and stream 1080p movies decently for 5 years. I had a Pentium 4 build with 2GB of RAM that lasted me from early 2005 to late 2013 just web browsing and playing old games. Although when I bought it it was around $600 or $700 not $400. To be honest if Microsoft didn't stop supporting Windows XP I'd still be using it in some fashion.

Check this build out I think this is a lot more reasonable. If he's just using for home theatre and web browsing then I'd say they woudnt appreciate the speed of an SSD. I would advise getting him this build then asking him getting to save something up for a decent 120GB SSD. You can tell him that it WILL greatly speed up his experience

If by future proof you mean it wont break in five years then yes almost everything nowadays is future proof in that context. Since you're building it each item will have a warranty so if it breaks in a year or two then just stroll into a shop and get a new one ;)
