So I recently watched Linus's and Lay's video on how to get the GPU fans speeds to 0% (By the way, I did it with my EVGA GTX 750 Ti SC and it worked pretty well) and I was wondering, is there any possible way to get the CPU fan to stop? I have the stock Intel heatsink and underneath it is an i5-4570, so no overclocking. I am looking to make my PC as silent as possible, although the CPU fan running at 12.5% is almost completely silent. I don't think temperature will be an issue because I stopped the fan forcefully once and the temps didn't skyrocket or did anything funny (in fact, it just stayed the same and MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, went up by 1°C. I'm just looking to make the fan stop when idle so the PC is dead silent during the night if I have to keep it on. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you can change the CPU fan speed with a program like speedfan, but there are software and hardware restrictions in place so it's tricky. If you're sure you want to do it you could just unplug the fan? but it's sure to set off some headers on your mobo (i.e. the onboard speaker).

yes, and it seems like that the limitation is 12.5% at the minimum if I go into the motherboard BIOS and set to that, but it won't let me go any lower. So that's what I'm asking, is there any remotely possible way to do it without unplugging the fan? lol

You could find a 3 or 4 pin (whatever your CPU fan uses) switch and run it through the outside of the case to turn it on/off that way. I wouldn't know where to find on but that's probably the only way to do it without hard modifying the software I'm afraid. :/

Yes, interesting. I have a 3-pin splitter and I CAN plug that into the PWM header of the heatsink and then onto the case's fan controller, but I think maintaining PWM for the CPU is kind of important (what if I forget to turn up the fan speed when I start to game or something). Wondering if you can tweak something in the BIOS like the GPU or is it just not possible?

I don't think so. The problem (apart from the fact that the CPU might overheat) is that the CPU fan(s) are one on the main components for pushing air through your PC and maintaining an even air flow. without the CPU fan(s) pushing air through the case there would be a build up of air, which would be trapped.

This isn't the reason that there's a restriction on using less than 12.5% of the CPU fan header, but it's a factor.

If you really want to go for a silent build I'd recommend a silent fanless CPU configuration. There are some good ones out there that work really well.

I don't think the CPU fan pushes the air around the case. Really, the case fans do. The CPU fan just pushes air onto the heatsink and that air takes away the heat generated by the CPU. It's not like that you can have a computer with a CPU fan and that's it... The case fans are used to suck air in and push air out.

Whoops. Yeah in my comment I meant to put through the CPU heatsink instead of through the case. It's 3am here don't judge me :P

My CPU fans are actually doing most of the work in my PC, the exhaust fan doesn't actually even switch on until the CPU gets to 45 degrees, and the front intakes until 55

Oh, so you use pwm on your case fans as well? Or some sort of fan controller?

No, actually, all my fans are controlled in the motherboard (ASUS Z97-A) BIOS. only the CPU fans are PWM (and as such I have much more control over them)

The case fans are all non-PWM, but the motherboard is able to control the voltage to each of the fan headers

But the lowest I can set them is 60% max speed, However i can also tell them to not power on until a certain point. I can have better control over them with software though.

Take out the fans. Problem solved. If they are going to run at 0%, why even have fans installed?

EDIT:

Wait... Shit... You said only when its idle. Okay. Dont listen to me. Bad idea.
