Hello forums, I'm new here so don't expect much. For Christmas i got an Alienwear laptop from my family. I repetitive told my dad i wanted to build my PC, and not get a pre-build one, but he said they were "too expensive" (right, and Alienwear inst). I didn't hate it, but with my 15th birthday coming up, i thought to return this laptop to get some funds for this build. I'm a bit new to the PC building, so do not mind if I made so errors. I made the build myself, so im not sure if everything will work together.

CPU: Intel Core 15-4590

Your build would work, but this will give you better performance per dollar, although I did not include any peripherals, so if you need those included, just tell me and I can make you a new build with peripherals and under you max budget of $870.

Do you plan on overclocking this build? Because having a Z97 may not be entirely necessary. It'd be better to move up to an unlocked one.  So far this build looks really good.

Edit: Quick build for $860 without rebates, went a bit cheaper on the MoBo and the 960, throwing in a 256GB SSD and improving your CPU

I second this. Gtx 970 gonna be far more powerful then gtx 960. And i5-4690 is great gaming cpu.

no, I'm not planning to over clock, mabey down the line, yes.

Ok, then the build above can support overclocking and fit a 970 if you're willing to cheap out on a lot of items.

Ok, i like this, but i might just go with a 750W psu just for a bit more "future proof". Mabey in a little while i might get some water cooling and over clock the cpu, etc. To me, i really dont want an ssd, so that will geve more some more fun money, so ill wont get that. I dont know how well the board overclocks, that being my only question.

For that build i reccomend the antec tpc 650 its 80+ gold, cheap and fits ur build perfectly plus overhead, no need for a 750W psu

CPU-i5 4690k 4.4ghz @ 1.190V, MOBO-MSI z97 gaming 3, Cooler-hyper 212 evo, GPU- r9 290x asus directcuII (-37Mv), Storage-120gb v300(switching soon), 1tb caviar blue, CASE-Red/black h440, PSU-Antec TPC 650.

A 750W would be fine, especially if you plan on adding another 970 or 960 card in the future. This is what I got when adding a 750 psu with a 970.

BUT: This mobo does not support SLI and one that does will put you at around $890. Unless you go with a GTX 960. Then you'll be put at about $770.

Ok, Maybe if you go with a 960 build, then maybe you can use that extra $$$ in liquid cooling. The 200R case should hopefully support some water cooling options.

How about... this. As OP doesn't seem to be into OCing, a Xeon 1230 v3 would be a nice choice.
