I'd like to put another R9 295X2 into this system, but I'm a bit unsure about the PSU needs. Do you think I would have to upgrade the PSU before putting an additional card in?

PSU - EVGA Supernova 1200W P2 Platinum

GPU - Sapphire R9 295X2

MB - ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Hero

CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K

Cooling - Corsair Hydro Series H110 280mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

RAM - Corsair DDR3 2400 16GB

SSD - Crucial M550 1TB

Thanks in advance.

1200w is fine for Quadfire, but do you really want to upgrade and buy another R295X2 when the R300 series coming? I would wait to see how that pans out to see if the R390X is as kickass as it is rumored to be before investing in something like that.

You can run dual 295x2's on a 1000w PSU. You're perfectly fine. :)

No you can't.

You should be fine with the PSU... But make sure that you have enough space for three whole radiators in your case. Remember, the tubing isn't that long on those cards and you'll have to find another spot apart from the top and rear to mount this extra rad.

According to a PSU calculator, 1200W is cutting it REALLY close. I would recommend upgrading to a 1500W PSU if you're eager to make the switch. I personally would advise waiting until the 390s and see if the price drops/what will come out of the AMD factory next.

Hope this helps :D

Just NO!!

Ignore power calculators, they are WRONG.

A 4970@4.7 with one of these pulls ~660w total under gpu stress test.

So my point is valid that 1200W isn't enough... he plans to use two of the 295x2 therefore being 1300W under load.

The 659 is referring to the load of the entire system, not just the graphics card. The card itself draws ~190W at idle, and peaks in at just under 500W under load. If he wanted to overclock them, yeah he needs more wattage. But he didn't say he was doing that. And just wanted to let some worries rest: there is practically nothing that will put 2x 295x2's under constant 100% load except for synthetic benchmarks.

1200 is fine for a power supply, dude. But wait until the 300's come out (like everyone else says). Prices will drop yet again.

Alright my bad. I would agree with you though on waiting for the 300s... There's no news so either it's coming really soon or...

nah no worries, mate. When I checked the chart that's what I initially thought, too. The number just seemed off to me so I dug a little deeper.

Regardless, you have a valid point, because that system will draw ~1020W. The quality of that PSU and the platinum efficiency is what would allow him to run it effectively. If it was like a bronze 1200W (which I don't think exists lol) I'd be worried :)

Anywho, the 300 series is anxiously anticipated by many of us, though I'm personally going to be running a second 280X instead of waiting for them. I'm impatient and the prices right now are phenomenal.

You know think its a really good idea to add another 295x2. It will scale horribly. You will see improvements but its not going to be significant. You might see a 15-20% boost in fps not much more than that.

Look at this articles's gaming benchmark and you'll see. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/04/29/amd_radeon_r9_295x2_crossfire_video_card_review/1#.VSKVvfnF-Ck

you might just want to wait for the 300s for a further price drop

That's the plan at the moment. The upgrade + new 1440p monitor is gonna run ~$550 so it's not something I can just jump on right now. Ugh, forced patience -_-
