Graphics card overheating

In order to help a friend with some pc issues, I told him to get speccy then pastebin the results.

"512MB ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series (ATI)   70 °c"

70C is about 150F and that doesn't seem acceptable. Any ideas to keep it cooler?

Heres the full results for those interested; its fairly ghetto and dated, but whatever http://pastebin.com/pR7Qy1NM

If I remember correctly, my 3870 got pretty warm on load. Though, this was with a reference blower style cooler.

  • Increase airflow in the case (cable management, ventilation, dust removal, fan positions)
  • Replace the thermal paste on the graphics card
  • Aftermarket coolers

Idle

Have you checked the thermal paste on the heat sink that could have worn off and may need to be replaced.

My friend isn't very techy and would need help. That's probably the issue though

Linus has a guide on it he may want to check out:

Let him use GPU-Z. Speccy can sometimes be a but off. And check if the fans are spinning as they should.

It's fine. Moderns cards run upwards of 95c. Older cards ran around those temps all the time as well. I think my old 4850 ran in the 80c range
