RAM (Mabey) issues

Go to solution Solved by Micky Love,

So can I confirm that buying replacement RAM would correct these issues?

if MEMTEST86 found errors, the RAM is more than probably bad...

After 3 builds with perfect RAM, I suggest you take a look at GSKILL ARES

in the quantity and specs that you need... it's also a low profile RAM so it fit

with almost any coolers...

Hey all,

So I've got 8 Gigs of Patriot Viper DDR3 RAM. (PV38G160C9K)

For a while now my PC has been occasionally locking up. i.e. completely freezing, no BSOD, just stops responding completely and requires a hard reset. It usually happens when I'm doing P2P stuff, in either World of Tanks, or uTorrent.

I assumed it was a windows driver issue until I did some research and found that it may be caused by my RAM. I ran memtest (As option from the GRUB bootloader that my installation of Ubuntu added, not inside windows - my main OS). I first ran memtest with both DIMMs and errors were found (70 after having been run for a few hours).

After some thorough testing I came to the conclusion that one of the DIMMs was causing the errors and the other passes fine. I also tested each DIMM in each of 4 slots on the motherboard to test if they could be the issue. They weren't, the 'bad' stick was bad everywhere and the 'good' stick was passing everywhere.

Right so that's it then? Apparently not.

With just the good DIMM inserted I have seen it freeze once over the last few days in the same was as before.

While doing a stress test (with Heavyload) the system BSODed. I didn't get chance to see the error and it hasn't happened again during the one more test I ran.

So, is the RAM the problem? Even if it passes in memtest, why is the 'good' DIMM still crashing the system.

Are there any other tests I can use? Even if it isn't the RAM and its a Windows driver issue thats causing crashing, surely the RAM errors in memtest should mean that the RAM is dead too? Its weird that both a RAM issue and another issue could be causing crashing. Should I buy a replacement set of RAM?

Are you fully using your RAM when stress testing with 1 stick (of i'm assuming 4gb RAM)

you may get a BSOD from doing that.

What BSOD are you getting?

Current Desktop Build | 2200G | RX 580 4GB | 8GB RAM | CTRL | Logitech G Pro Wireless

Laptop | 2018 MBA 256/16GB | MX Master

and yes, when stress testing the RAM it is using pretty much all 4GB, There does seem to be a few MB spare but it really pushes it.

you crash under Windows or Ubuntu ??

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04.1

I did a clean install (format etc...) of the new version 14.04.2 and no more freeze problem, at all...

It's the first time that I really enjoy Ubuntu, all the last versions were crashing with RAM problem, almost

all the time it was related to a browser... (tested on 2 PC)

Edit: never mind, I just saw your report

I have only ever crashed in Ubuntu once and that was during a graphics driver switch.
