what kinda of fan can i order if i dont a reference stock cooler ?

It only works with stock reference blower.

Some 290Xs have built in VRM cooling plates, and you won't need to worry about VRM cooling.  For those that don't have built in VRM cooling, $12 of thermal pads and heatsinks will solve any worries you might have.

Looking in your profile, you have a VisionTek R9 290X.  Is this your PCB?

If it is, then yes you will need thermal pads and heatsinks.

Thermal Pads - $6

Aluminum Heatsinks - $6

NZXT G10 - $10-$30 <-- Check Tigerdirect or Newegg for good deals on the bracket.

Corsair H55 - $40-$60

Optional:

VGA to PWM Adapter - $6

120mm Fan - $8-$25

Grand total, it shouldn't cost you more than $100 to cool your R9 290X.
