Hi all,

I have a BigBang XPower 2 mobo which I'm using the onboard RAID to control 3 WD Red in RAID5.

Performance on this is no good, I assume because of the onboard nature of the RAID controller, using the CPU to do raid calculations?

I would really like Linus to review some popular RAID cards, ranging from 4 - 16 port cards, with and without SSD caching, so we can see what we can expect from this solution.

There are quite a few different options out there, and I feel that having a no nonsense type of review LMG produces so well would help many hardware enthusiasts thinking about going dedicated RAID but are not sure what direction to take.

Of course I'd happily take advise from other forum dwellers.

Thanks!

Yeah, having a dedicated controller to do the calculations would be much better for performance.

RAID 5 controllers with a cache on them perform really well, but they cost hundreds of dollars. The cheapest I can think of off the top of my head is the LSI 9260-8i.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei
