Worth upgrading i7 - 920

Hello guys.
First my specs:

i7-920 stock - h50 cooled
Msi Xpower x58 mobo
12gb 1333mhz kingston value ram

gtx 660 TI SLI
120gb ssd ocz vertex
Corsair TX850w
Haf-X case

+ a elgato gamecapturer HD  -> to a i7 3630QM laptop
-------

Usage of my PC for:
Arma II / DayZ Gameplay
Battlefield 3
Upcomming BF4 / DayZ SA

Creating movies for youtube (using only windows live movie maker / Photoshop and sometimes after effects)

-------

The question - Is it worth upgrading for a 4770k or a 3820?

And my major issue atm is that i think the rig is way too large and noisy, if the upgrade is worth it, i would like to get somethink in a M-atx size with a low noise.

Currently I'm thinking about a asus gryphon with a 4770k - but people say that its hot as hell, but how is it compared to a 920 ?

Please give me your thoughts :) Thanks!

920 is kinda old you should upgrade to a new CPU but if you take this video making seriosly i would say go for a 3820 .

He is the hero this forum deserves but not the one it needs right now.So we'll hunt him because he can take it because he is not our hero he is a silent guardian

Go for a 3930K that one has six cores and hyper threading much better for video editing.

Well I render maximumly 20 minutes of 1080p. And why - the 4770k beats the 3820 in benchmarking.

I've thought about the 3930k - but the benefit for the double price is not worth it when you're studying and do not have a job.

Or would it even be worth waiting for the new ivybridge-E ?

If you don't have better use for the money go for it.

Personally I wouldn't. Mostly because I'm poor, but in my eyes the performance increase isn't that much.

I think it's worth upgrading to the 4770K because you laptops CPU is probably stronger than the i7 920.

Well my only concern is that if the 920' will affect my fps.

Yes my laptop is stroger cpu vise, but have a weaker gfx.

Go for the 3770k as it generates less heat and is more overclockable and is also pretty good for rendering videos.

The 920 is still a great CPU, stick a better cooler on it, overclock it and it will still handle whatever you throw at it. Even if you decide to upgrade the cooler and the fans will still work and still be useful.

Absolutely not, the 920 is still a very powerful CPU, the only thing I would recommend is buying a Noctua Nh-D14 cooler, it will reduce the amount of noise in your case considerably & you will be able to overclock your CPU to improve performance, pretty much a win-win situation.
If you want to build a micro-atx system I would recommend a 3570K &  a noctua NH-C14 cooler , the 3570K generates significantly less heat than the 4670K & consumes less power.

My problem with the 920' I've gotten, is that it overclocks like SHIT.. Were talking about 3.1 Ghz MAX stable, and with high voltages... So this is not worth overclocking ( and I'm not a noob at this )

Yes the I7-920 can sometimes hit 3.5-3.6GHz but u need a TON of cooling.  Also add in 3 generations of architecture improvements, the vastly better power consumption of Haswell and you'll be able to hit decent OC's 4.2GHz or so on an H50 or something of the sort.  Haswell is an 84w CPU vs 77w of Ivy Bridge, but the dynamic regulation of wattage in Haswell is so much improved that you'll see much less power consumption in every scenario except maybe under 100% load at stock.  When overclocked Haswell needs less voltage than Ivy Bridge thus lower power consumption.

Yes it worth upgrading, get a Haswell CPU if you are just gaming or get a 3930k if your video editing and gaming.  The 920 is pretty old now.

I say you go for nice Ivy Bridge setup unless you have a ton to spend, in which case just go with Haswell, I don't think you will really see a difference between a 4770k and any 2011 socketed CPUs for as little as you do video editing wise, and will save you a boat load of cash, which you can use for a better closed loop cooler like the H220, the h50 is not the best by any means and the fans will have to be loud if its not cooling the Rad enough. Plus then you could go M-atx with a nice new board
