ECC Memory on a Non ECC board

Okay, bit weird of a question, but if you put ECC memory in a regular board will it work without the ECC functionality.

 

It's actually a great deal cheaper for me to get ECC memory dimm's through a buddy of mine and if it will work then that will be a huge boost because I can get 2gb dimms for $10 a dimm and up to 18 dimms. In Aus memory usually runs about $50 for 4gb for the slow stuff so this could potentially be huge discounts for me.

 

If nobody knows then I'll probably just grab one or two dimms tomorrow for a test and see how it goes.

it will just register it as normal ram without the ecc part so you are settled my friend

Just wondering, for ECC to error correct, do both the board and the cpu need to support it? So popping an i3 (most of which support ecc afaik) into a z87 won't make it error correct?

The CPU and mobo have to support it. I'm more wondering if you don't have a ECC compatible motherboard or CPU then does it just magically become regular ram again or does it cause compatibility issues.
