so lately for some reason Steam is using a lot of CPU usage, at idle as im typing this its at 20-25% usage with other steam programs, what can i do? its starting to impact my gameplay by making me lag badly

EDIT, also when i right click to close it in the start bar, it doesnt actually close it, i have to use task manager to close all programs to make sure its closed properly

i5-4670k

currently at 24% CPU usage after restarting it

That's not normal at all, I have a 4670k as well and all my steam processes are at 0% usage.

  • 2 weeks later...

what would that do?

If they are trying to change a file in the steam directory, it could cause a conflict.

after uninstalling bitdefender and malwarebytes, steam did load up a lot quicker then it has been, will continue to monitor CPU usage for a bit and see if thats what is cauing the issue, might have to switch to another anti virus program, might give AVG a try or go back to using norton 360

Dont go to norton, that would be a step backwards, use Malware Bytes, Windows defender (Microsoft security essentials) and the almighty brain.

My current build - Ever Changing.

It is incredibly slow, and lets pretty much anything through.

slow? yes, very slow to scan through the computer, had to leave it overnight scanning plenty of times and still, ive never actually had any problems with it and viruses, does come up with false positives a lot when downloading certain game editors (single player game editors)

Just use MSE and your brain; Both are free and both have kept my computer clean for years.

Just google "why do people hate norton".

I don't know if Norton is still as bad today as it used to be but bascially they gave themselves such a bad name that every techie has vowed never to go near that horrible piece of crap again. One of the main reasons for this was because it was extremely difficult to uninstall. No matter what you did it just kept on coming back. That and the fact that it was a complete resource hog. And you had to pay a lot for it.

I think it may have been older versions of Norton that were the real problem (apparently previous to 2007). Not sure what they are like since then. Doesn't matter for a lot of people though (myself included). You shit on your customers even once and they will remember for a long long time.

Fair enough. I guess everyone has their own experiences. Out of curiosity, what do you use?
