800$ Gaming PC Help!

Go to solution Solved by zappian,

I think im going to go with an i5, what i5 and what motherboard would you guys reccomend? I was looking at either an i5-4460 or a i5 4590. For the motherboard I am looking at the ASrock H81M and the Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H. Any ideas?

Get the 4440 and the ds3h board tbh.

The 4440 is great price/peformance , its the cheaper i5.

Then you can oc your 280 to about 280x levels so you will have a solid rig.

i5+ 280.

Hey everyone, recently my brother asked me to help him build a 800$ (CAD) gaming PC. After a bit of shopping and asking others for advice I have come up with this: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/LgcG6h

I want to know if anybody had any recommendations on what i could change with this build to make it better. Here is a list of everything the PC must do:

  • Be a maximum of 800$ including taxes and shipping
  • Preferably parts fromwell trusted vendors (Newegg, NCIX)
  • Run most games in 1080p at a smooth framerate and at high to ultra settings
  • Include a bluetooth dongle in the build (he has a wireless headset)
  • Have a small form factor (micro atx)
  • Be reliable with well known parts
  • A quad-core+ processor
  • Be upgradeable to 16gb of ram in the future
  • Have a usb 3.0 header on the motherboard and support 1600mhz+ ram
  • Have 1tb of storage
  • 600w psu good for future upgrades

Please tell me what you think of the build and if there's anything I could change to get better performance for the price. Thanks!

Keep in mind an i3 wont bottleneck a 280x , you usually want to spend more in gpu..

If you are not comfortable with an i3 tell me and I will do an i5 build.

but when it comes to physics, a dual core can snuggle in high intensity scenarios

I have an i3 and it has no problem running any game i throw at it tbh.

I would perfer an i5 and a 280 instead of the i3 and 280x. Can the 280 be overclocked to match the 280x?

I was thinking of taking an i3, but i wasn't sure if it would run multi thread games like farcry 4. Do you think it will run with hyperthreadning enabled?

The game shouldn't be able to tell the difference so it should run fine. I just don't know if it'll be fast enough but I'm pretty sure it will be. Graphics are much more important and unless you're going for the top of the line in graphics and you're only going to be gaming and doing other light computing, you can just get an i3. I would definitely go with an intel build.

Lemme make a list...

G3258 @ 4.5 | 8GB Team Vulcan RAM | 128GB Kingston V300 SSD (I didn't know what I was doing when I bought it) | MSI H81I Motherboard | Corsair H55 with Noctua NF-P12 | EVGA SSC GTX 960 4GB | OCZ 550W Fully Modular PSU with Noctua NF-A14 | Cooler Master Elite 130 (Soon to be something cool)

Get this if you're fine with MIRs. If you have a micro center near you the CPU is a little cheaper there too.
You can get another 280x for crossfire in the future, you can add another 8gb of RAM because it has 4 slots, you can overlock that CPU since you have a "Z" board and a cooler, That's a 600w PSU, this has a HDD and SSD (take out SSD if you don't want one).

If I was making this for myself I might get a Corsair 350D because it's nicer but then I would also pick other parts that looked better and pay a bunch more money...

Ok great, I was thinking about getting an i3 for the great upgrade path but I wasn't sure about having 2 cores before. Looking at some gameplay on youtube shows that everything runs great with hyperthreadning

Yah, I have a G3258 and I just play league and bioshock infinite and it works great so an i3 should be about the same. Look at that parts list I posted though because it has an i5 AND a 280x

My budget is 800$ Canadian, not US. My budget would be around 650$ US

Oh, sorry, I was wondering why I seemed to get so much more than others...

i5 with a 280 for $765 CAD. 280x would make the total about $850 CAD.

Could you make a i5 build? I'd like to see what you can make and i'll compare it against the other suggestions I got. Thanks

I was able to find a 4460 for the same price as the 4440, I might as well get the 4460 right? As for the board, I looked around and found another msi board that has 4 ram slots instead of 2 and a usb 3.0 header for 15$ more. I would like to upgrade to 16gb in the future and the case has a usb 3.0
