External hard drive enclosure?

i have 2 hard drives one with family photos and music on it (family pc hard drive) and a almost bare seagate 750gb. what would be a cheap but stll decent solution so i could back up the photos and have extra space for my laptop on the second drive.

you can get sata to usb adapters, but they're pretty ugly and you need an external power supply.

 

If you want a nice enclosure for it all you could have a look on ebay for a faulty one, then replace those drives for yours?

Are you talking about 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch harddrives? For 3.5 inch drives you'll need an external power adapter, 2.5 inch drives can run off USB. You can find plenty of 2.5 enclosures on DX and a few 3.5 inch as well, they're cheap but it ships from China so give it some time.

Have you considered a DAS or a NAS? 

 

DAS stands for Directly Attached Storage and works like an external drive, but it has a lot more storage space. The only downside would be that it requires external power (USB is too weak to power it) and is not portable. NAS stands for Network Attached Storage and is basically your local cloud setup. You connect it to your router and have access to it through your network and internet (pretty much like an external hard drive connected to your router via USB, only with many additional features and larger storage capacity). ACtaully ive been throwign around the idea of getting a home server and nas it seems like a good investment to keep data backed up and a stronger setup thats more secure in my house. i know it will cost a lot to get a set up going which is my only delay. i would need to get good wireless hard ware( im still running a n router, i would prefer a ac upgrade before i get to far). but as for a nas i can just set it up with my routers in a room and plug it in via usb correct? and it will use the network to connect to my pcs then ?

what i  want is more as the last user said is something like a nas where i can put my drives in and forget about it with my routers. but i would need a dual bay something i can store two hard drives in. yes my dtives are 3.5 i dont like 2.5 drives always to slow.

A NAS is basically a hard drive connected to a router. A pre-built NAS (like the ones I gave as an example) are connected to the router via a network cable and are accessed over the network by one or more devices (wireless or not). Basically if you have access to the network, you can access the NAS (if you permission for that).
