I spend quite a bit of time organizing my files manually, I don't know of any programs that sort files for you. Following the thread for potential useful suggestions!

Sorting through 20k songs is quite a pain...

Damn 20K songs? Wouldn't mind downloading that collection.

Uploading would take forever. I've got a ridiculous amount of electronic and orchestral music.

I've actually been kinda procrastinating, I still have unsorted files...

Why don't you use MusicBee? It's pretty cool, can identify songs and fill ID3 tags using MusicBrainz, sort stuff into albums and artists folders.

Probably because I've never heard of it or actively searched for music file organization programs. I'll have a look at that one thanks.

Organize? Not really unless it is very important. I just have a few generic directories like video and music.

As I load new content I'll do a quick check to look for duplicate content but that is about it. Any strict organization policy is not going to work for me because I may do it once but I'll never keep doing it.

Depends on what I'm organizing.

  • For video stuff (movies, TV shows, etc), I have alphabetic folders for A-Z in my Videos folder, with each show in their own folder under the respective letter.
  • For music stuff, I have them by origin, since I have a lot of sound tracks (also the reason why I can't use an automatic sorter of any kind)
  • For picture stuff, I have them by type: One folder for screenshots, one for photos, one for wallpapers. These can have subfolders based on origin, such as screenshots from specific shows and photos by date.

Speaking from experience, going from an unorganized, gigantic mess to a meticulously organized structure of folders is a major task (even more so if you fuck up something and have to start over), but once you have the system in place, it's fairly easy to keep.

The thing is, manual organization requires effort and discipline. If you lack either of those, you'll end up quitting at some point and then you'll just have a partially sorted library with a massive, scary-as-doberman "random" or "unsorted" folder. Automatic organization requires tons of prep-time, because if you're not 100%, absolutely, completely and utterly sure that it's going to work as you want and need it to, it can take your disorganized mess and turn it into an organized mess.

I own and use, sorted from newest to oldest: SteelSeries 6Gv2. Microsoft SideWinder X4. Mionix Naos 7000. Zowie EC1 Evo. Microsoft SideWinder X8. Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0. Dell U2414H. Samsung P2270H. AKG K273 Pro. Sennheiser HD555. Razer Goliathus Speed Medium. Func 1030 L. Qpad CT Medium.

I used to own: Razer DeathAdder 3G. Razer Krait. IntelliMouse Optical 1.1. SteelSeries QcK.
