Hello,

I around 3 years I will take my GCSE maths test(s).

I would like to start revising now, but i'm not sure what would be the best way.

I currently do around 3 hours of maths a week with my time table, but that will most likely rise next year.

I am currently downloading pass papers and looking at the solutions and writing everything down ect.

I am also doing GCSE work in my maths class at the moment, ( set 1 in my school start early ) and it seems okay for the most part.

However, in the pass papers, none of the stuff I am doing at the moment is actually in them...

I already know how to revise, i'm just not sure what the best way would be for Maths ( for example, using the MathsWatch CD ect. )

Thanks too anyone that can help,

- Harry

I used the maths watch CD when I took mine a couple years ago, and it was useful, but not as much use as getting a revision book with exam style questions in it, so I could teach myself stuff I wasn't sure on. It's good for just checking over something though.

Seeing how the spec has changed, and due to different exam boards, it's quite difficult to be certain what will come up.

I'd review concepts and just do problems. Tbh at high level math, it's hard to judge. I'm not sure what you covered, but on my calculus 2 midterm last week, we were doing:

Lim t-->0 of t*ln(t) and solve that limit. I had no idea we were supposed to do ln(t)/(1/t) then apply L'hopital's rule. Had I done that problem, I would've probably remembered. So just review all the problems is what I would recommend doing.

I wish I revised so early!

I only started five months before my exams, although I did get 2 A*'s, 3 A's 5 B's and 1 C.

Mathswatch is what I found to be most useful, at least better than Mymaths.

It comes down to what type of learner you are, either visual or audio based.

You honestly won't be able to effectively revise things you haven't yet learnt in class, i guess you could start learning a few things that you will do in Year 10 and Year 11 if that's what you mean. When i was doing my GCSE maths i used this dude on Youtube who was a maths teacher and basically watched his videos on things that i couldn't understand through my revision material; you honestly don't need to revise 3 years in advance.

You could try and learn things you haven't yet done but you will not understand things on the level of which you will when you're taught them in year 10 and 11.

Revise from? Surely you won't have covered half the stuff in them though? Or have you started some stuff early, i was in top set but we only started the stuff in year 10 and 11?

They're covered throughout year 10 and 11 but the exams are taken in year 11

Thought so I'm about as far away from them as @iHammmy but I haven't thought about them at all, though we do occasionally do GCSE level work in maths lessons as well.

Even though i'm in top set, maths isnt really my strong point and I tend to struggle quite abit.

Also, we have started to do GCSE maths and my teacher says it's A* level ( I dont know if hes BSing or ) but we have been doing stuff like factorising

X+ 3x - 10

Is stuff we have been doing

It seems impossible until it's done.

Same, we've just finished factorising, but we were doing 'GCSE level' according to my last years maths teacher as well as this year - not really sure if last years teacher was talking nonsense or not but now I think the work we are doing is around C grade for GCSE. Maths is pretty much my strongest subject and I'm in top set.

I'm in top set for everything and I think Maths is my weakest subject out of all core subjects, but then again I did just move up from set 2 last year so the speed of the work is struggling for me...

Science is my strongest subject IMO

Yeah to be honest maths wasn't my strongest and i did struggle on some things but i had a great teachers. Sometimes, the work at A* might not be as difficult as say B level work; it all just depends on the type of things you find easy/difficult and how easy you understand things.

He won't be BSing you, some of the A* work can be grasped quite easily as some things aren't that difficult to do IF you understand them. Everything kind of builds up so you're never really just thrown into a topic without any knowledge whatsoever on it, you at least have a little understanding of what may be going on and how to approach it.

I went from set 3 to set 1 so i know how you feel, when i was told in year 9 i was furious and was just 'wtf'. If you don't understand something, tell your teacher and make sure you understand it. Otherwise it will all just get on top of you but you'll be fine. I made the mistake of if i didn't understand something i'd just be like oh well fuck it, came to regret that later on in the years.

Wise words :)

I normally ask friends if I get stuck, as they're all pretty clever...

Wow, set 3 to set 1?! Did you struggle for the first part?

Pretty much same, but my strongest is maths/science idk which and last year I was in top set - it was almost completely random last year though. Now in maths we've started doing area, perimeter and circumference of circles and sectors of circles.

It wasn't that i so much struggled but wasn't as comfortable with the stuff as everyone else was or didn't grasp it as quickly as they did, my maths teacher had this annoying way of not moving on to another person before she knew i fully understood. The thing with moving up sets so quickly, is the work at the beginning basically required general understanding of what was going which i didn't so much have because i hadn't done the work in which that general knowledge was acquired from.

As an example, at the beginning of year 10 my maths teacher would say 'integer'. At that point i didn't even know what an integer was (i know..) so i'd turn around to people and be 'da fuqs an integer'. But because i didn't understand that stuff, it was slower for me to pick things up.

WOW PMSL xD xD xD

Yeah, thats the same with me...

I don't struggle alot but everyone in the class understands stuff much quicker than me...

I've started to write down everything I don't understand so I can revise it :)

It seems impossible until it's done.

Look over weak areas and try different methods of solving questions using past papers

What exam board are you doing?

I did AQA Maths btw

I took my maths in Year 10 and achieved a solid A, so there is nothing to worry about if you practice

One word of warning, if you take GCSE maths in year 10, u will have to do Further and Additional Maths (which IMO is hard as hell when compared to normal maths)

As a student who is going to one of the top Grammar Schools in the country and is decent at GCSE maths, dont hesitate to PM me anytime to discuss problems

Well, i'm going to a normal school, and maths isnt my strong point so i'm pretty different to you :P

On my pass papers from 2012, it says "Edexcel GCSE Higher Tier"

Also, ill remember to PM you if I need help :) :)

Thanks for the reply

I have used the official Edexcel workbook, and that is harder than the AQA papers

I am currently doing OCR for further Maths

GCSE math is not a difficult course to be fair, it does no require 3 years revision previous to the beginning of the course. study throught the year that you do the course and you will be fine. Even if you do struggle with math 3 years prior revision is just way too much.
