3ds friend codes constant forever?

Hey guys,

I'm gonna be getting the new 3ds soonish and I was wondering if the friend code remains the same between DS's.

I assume it does as it's (hopefully) linked to accounts rather than DS's. 

I'm just not entirely sure, if I could get some confirmation/correction that would be great.
