Microsoft Word footnote help?

Hey everyone, I'm writing a paper this evening and I'm getting far with it, but on the first page I've noticed that the line separating footnotes and the body of the text has a gap between it and that annoys me a lot. When I go to the start of the first footnote and hit the backspace key nothing happens. How can I get rid of this gap without deleting my footnotes and redoing them all?
