HDD sometimes lags

I have a 4tb WD black hard drive installed in my computer and sometimes lags when it access it in windows explorer. I did an error check on it and nothing wrong, plus checked the cables and I can't tell what causes the lag. I currently have about 600 GB of stuff on it.

 

Just to be clear of what happens. Sometimes when I click on the drive windows explorer says (not responding) for a few seconds and then it after that works perfectly from that point o. If I don't access that drive for a while, this lag happens again. I just use this drive as storage since I also have an SSD.

 

Can you think of anything that might be causing this lag? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this drive just that the lag when I access it sometimes kinda worries me that I might fail sometime later or if its some kind of warning sign.

This is probably just because it's just being used for storage.

It will only spin up when needed, and spinning up needs a few seconds.

Is it better to stp the disk from idling? I found the setting in the power settings and it is set to 20 minutes. Is it better to increase this time, set it to never turn to idle or leave it as is?

Run a defrag to help it along. If you are only on the computer for a couple of hours each day can try stopping the idle. Though if you're on it all day might be for the better to leave idle on for the motor.

Depending on your mainboard the HDD may be getting the "power down" command when not in use and have to effectively "boot" from complete power off rather than just idle (powered on but spun down) this can cause windows to "hang" for about 5-10 seconds as the drive initializes in the case of a complete power off you hear your drive do the "seek" click and then spin up that is usually associated with the initial boot.

I have mine set to always on. That should not cause an issue.
