help Getting to know graphics cards

Heyo internet

I know a fair bit about CPUs. Enough Tu make an educated session myself about which one to get. The same is not true of graphics cards. What do I need to know to pick a graphics card? And of you have a bit of spare time... Could you teach me?

There's not a whole lot to it if you just want to pick one. Do you want to know more about the different architectures or do you just want to make an educated decision when buying one? If it's the latter then you just look up the cards in your price range and compare benchmarks, that's it. You can only compare the specs if the cards use the same architecture and the same chip (970 and 980, for example). But even then there are other variables that you'll only notice in benchmarks (970 performing worse than expected at higher resolutions, etc.). So, yeah. Stick to benchmarks and either get whatever brings you the most fps/dollar or see how important specific features are to you.

you pick a price, go to pc partpicker and chose the one with the highest number within your price

 

but remember the equivlent tiers of amd and nvidia

 

the gtx y70 is about the same as amd y80x (could not use x because amd has a x at the end of their cards sometimes)

You're a little off. R9 290X is similar to a 780Ti which is similar to a 980, and a R9 290 is similar to a 780 which is similar to a 970.

the 270-760 are all  on the same level 

760 seems to usually beat it in benchmarks I've seen, but not by much.

okay.  970 is usually a little better than a 290 though.  I also forgot to include 780 and 780ti's. the 290x isn't as good as a 980 most of the time though.  I just wrote up a quick relative comparison
