Hey guys,

I'm currently using the following storage solution in my gaming rig:

> 1 Samsung 840 Pro 256gb SSD (boot drive & game storage)

> 1 WD Green 2TB HDD (secondary game storage)

> 1 WD Green 4TB HDD (media storage)

I just purchased a second 840 pro 256gb SSD, and I would like to pair the two SSDs together in a RAID 0 configuration for a faster, higher capacity boot drive/game storage solution.

My question is - is it possible to set up the 2 SSDs in RAID 0, while still maintaining my 2 WD Green drives as secondary standalone "non-RAIDed" drives? A friend of mine told me that when running a RAID 0 setup, all sata-connected drives must be a part of the RAID config. I'm not sure if this is true and I can't seem to find much information about it on the web.

I also need to make sure that the data on the 2 HDDs remains untouched, as losing all that data would be devastating!

For the record I'm running an Asus Hero VII motherboard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Skywalker134,

You should not have any problems setting up the RAID with only the two SSDs in the array. All your other drives should stay untouched.
Do have in mind that the two SSDs will be formatted and you will lose all data on them.

I have to add that RAID0, while a great boost to loading times and transfer speeds, doubles the risk of failure and loss of data and you will actually have a longer cold booting time of your system compared to a single SSD boot.

Just to be safe, you could remove your two WD Green drives from your system while installing the RAID and the OS and then add them on the same SATA ports.

Hope this helps!
