Ethernet issues

Go to solution Solved by jhaun,

Well my modem only has one port and I need to connect my router to it and I wanted to connect my of to the modem as well which I would need more than one port for, sorry for not explaining much

NP. Modems generally only pass through one IP from the ISP, so you can only hook one thing up to it. If you get a better router it will have a built in switch that you can plug your desktop into, or if you get the new airport express it will have a second ethernet port that you can plug your switch into.

So your connected devices looks like:    Internet -> Modem -> Router -> Switch -> PC

?

if you directly connect your PC to the router does that make a difference ?

Have you tried rebooting your router ?  IE take the power out for a few minuites and put it back again?

well, my pc, modem, router are connected tot he switch with the modem being plugged into the 1st port. this was the only way becuase both my router and pc only have 1 ethernet connection point and no extras for the pc. Is it because my pc is connected to the switch and not the modem directly?

hi.  hmmm ok.   What model of router do you have?

There should at least be two ports on your router. one for the WAN conection (comming from your modem ) and one for your LAN connection (for your PC's)

The way you have to have them connected is that you conect your modem to the WAN port on the router and then the Routers LAN port (some routers have 4 switch ports so use these)  that connects to your switch you have.

If you give me the model number and make of your router I can tell you what you should have connected where :)

The Unidetifed is because your PC cant connnect to the network correctly.   If you can do the above for me we should be able to get it working!

Am I going to need a new router to plug my pc into, or am I fine that I plugged it into the modem?

I have an older generation Apple airport express router(plugs into wall) and the new modem is a surfboard sb6121 and a linksys 5 port switch

Oh i see.  hmmm  thats just for providing wireless.  Your going to need a different router then if you want a wired connection.

That's my only option?? It has nothing to do with the modem or switch?

Probably. The older airport express could only assign IPs to the wifi, since they only had a WAN ethernet port. Without knowing anything else about your network all I can say is you're outta luck.

Just curious, why do you have a switch? Is anything other than your airport, modem, and desktop plugged in?

May your framertes be high and your remperatures low.

NP. Modems generally only pass through one IP from the ISP, so you can only hook one thing up to it.
