Hi, so I have just gotten 2 GTX 980's for my system and when I started it up and started benchmarking I noticed my fps were oddly low. I checked my cpu (i5 3570k at 4.4) performance and it turns out it's running at 100% trying to keep up with the cards. So I am going to get an i7 4790k to replace it. Only problem is I don't know of a good motherboard to use due to the newer model and chipset. I'm looking for something with sli capabilities and an 1150 socket to use at around 200-300 bucks. I am thinking of an Asus Maximus VII Hero or an Asus Maximus VII Formula. Are these good choices?

I also have another concern. If I replace the motherboard will this impact any other parts of my PC. Will I need to re-install windows? Will it impact another part of my system? Things like that.

 Thank you.

 Also Happy New Year!

your fine with the current motherboard but both of those are good motherboards

it wont affect the parts but if your on windows 7 you will have to reactivate

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Are you sure? The motherboard I currently have is an 1155 socket and the cpu I will be getting is an 1150 socket. And I am using Windows 8.1.

If you've got the money for the formula, I'd reccomend the gaming 9 Ac(k), if you've got the money for the hero, I reccomend the gaming 7, both boards from MSI. If you want a cheaper one, with less features, but same hardware, MSI z97 PC mate. Z97 really only varies in software features. Not a whole lot of hardware variation.

Also, ignore the first part of the other guys post. An 1155 motherboard WILL NOT work with an 1150 CPU.

I would say an Asus Z97-A. It's a pretty nice motherboard..Also I would only get the "k" version and a Z97 instead of an H97 if you're overclocking. If you are you'll need a CPU cooler too.

(I have never tested any of these parts, and I can therefore never guarantee no faults.)

PC and Peripherals:

Intel Core i3 4150 @3.5GHz - ASRock H97M Anniversary - Kingston Fury HyperX Black 8GB DDR3 @1866MHz - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 G1 Gaming 2GB GDDR5 - EVGA 500W 80+ Certified - WD Caviar Blue 1TB - WD Caviar Blue 160GB - Lian Li PC-50 - Linux Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS - Acer P221w 21.5" 1680x1050 60Hz - Kingston Fury HyperX Clouds - Razer Deathadder 3.5G - CM Storm Quickfire Rapid w/ Cherry MX Blues

Maximus VII Hero here with a 4790k at 4.8 on 1.32v and works like a champ. Great mobo and very feature rich.

Motherboards Dont really make a difference for overclocking, that's up to the chip in this chipset/socket.

Didn't say it helped. I said its a nice feature rich motherboard for those who like to tinker.

And how would I go about doing that? Would I need the original copy, because I bought windows 7 then upgraded to windows 8.1 or would I need to buy a new copy of windows. Also when I re-install windows, will I need to worry about data loss or will it all still be there?

Data would be lost, you'd have to reinstall windows 7, and then reupgrade through windows back to 8.

I switched architecture and mobo and just plugged sad back in. Windows 8.1 is smart enough to know the change. It sysprepped itself and loaded new driver. All is fine. If you are on 8.1 you don't have to reinstall if you don't want to.

Ah, I'm not super familiar with windows 8, I use windows 7. Thanks for the correction mate.

No worries I'm sure it's still proper to reinstall but it's nice that it recognizes the change and pulls new driver without issue. I've done it on a few friends upgrades without a hitch. Most Sid ID's are stored on HArd drive so it will just adjust for the change.

I know with windows 7 you have to uninstall the chipset drivers in order to be able to keep the install.

Thank you. When I upgraded from win 7 to win 8 everything was saved, all the way down to the individual icons on my desktop.

Now it's just down to the motherboard. I the maximus formula a good choice?

At that price point I'd go with an MSI Gaming 9 AC, or ACK. But that's just my preference. Assuming we are talking z97.
