Hi, first time posting on here but a long time Linus follower and i do hear great things about the community so i thought i would give it a go. here is my dilemma.

my laptop and daily driver is a modest samsung 300v5a. about 2 weeks i installed windows 10 tech preview alongside windows 7 and things were brilliant, couldnt complain. i left it one afternoon on windows 10 for about an hour it wasnt running anything at the time just desktop, came back and it had restarted itself for some reason but i had to leave so i turned it off. this is where things get interesting.

when i turned it back on again it will go to samsung initial screen then nothing, it just flashes the screen on and then off about 1 second intervals. so restarted tried to get into bios to check settings and and it wont do that either just goes to flashing screen, so pulled a known working hard drive out of another laptop and tried it to check its not the sata connection and the known working hard drive works just fine. then tried my hard drive in the other laptop and hey presto it works just fine aswell, so on the questionable hard drive i booted into windows 10 and it worked fine. then tried windows 7 and that worked too so in windows 7 i made the assumption that the only variable that might be the problem is windows 10, so i went to msconfig and set windows 7 as default os and removed windows 10. changed the hard drives back and still nothing.

its very confusing, without the hard drive in i can get to bios to change settings even though nothing has been able to help. but with the hard drive in it wont even go to bios?

does anyone have any clues?

I know man, if i had the funds i would but i just cant afford the 150 for a 500 gb ssd right now, if i cant fix this problem then i may have to just save hard and get one but i would rather try and get to the bottom of this. plus i like the mental challenge its given me so far hahaha

yup all cables are plugged in solid and i have ruled out cables because other hard drives work just fine in it. i did make a usb repair tool but i cannot boot into it because when i have this hard drive plugged in once it gets past the samsung logo the screen just flashes on and off blank, cant get to bios or recovery or boot device select :S

what if, you unplug hdd/usb, sett usb boot over hdd and then plug everything back in and boot?

yeah i tried that one and it still just flashes the screen on and off? i dont get it, i know the hard drive works because im using it this very second in a different (albeit worse) laptop to write this. and i know the laptop works fine because i can use a different hard drive in it and it will boot just fine. its a real mind bender
